The Biobank is a service aimed at the collection, conservation and distribution of human biological samples and the data associated with them according to quality criteria shared at national and international levels. 

Since 1991, various collections of samples have been present in various departments and services of the Padua Hospital Trust, whose collection and management always refer to the general principles of law, with particular reference to the obligation of informed consent of the patient and the free transfer of biological samples. 

The Padua Biobank was institutionalized in 2020, bringing together collections of biological samples and blood products from departments of the Padua Hospital Trust, some of which have been active since 1991. 

The Research Biobank of the Padua Hospital-University Trust was established with the Resolution of the General Director n. 1822 of 22/12/2020, with the aim of creating and organizing a centralized Biobank at the University Hospital of Padua for the conservation and management of biological material collected for research purposes. The Biobank is a structure for the centralized collection and storage of significant biological samples, created in response to the need to have a certified, reliable, and valid system for the conservation of biological samples of various natures, preserving their biomolecular characteristics. The biological samples conserved may be included in clinical studies, and research projects approved by the Technical Scientific Committee.

The Biobank is a non-profit organization and was established with the aim of conserving biological material for research purposes. The ownership of the Biobank is of the Hospital-University of Padua Company, which is responsible for its operation and management, in compliance with the current legislation on the matter and who uses his own TEAM dedicated to carrying out the activity. 

The Hospital-University of Padua Company can provide for the conservation of its own samples and those of third-party entities, subject to the stipulation of a specific agreement.
